SAN FRANCISCO -- Police are investigating what led to a body being found in a garbage chute in San Francisco's Inner Mission District Wednesday night.

Officers responded to a report that a body was found at a motel in the 400 block of Valencia Street at about 11:15 p.m., police Officer Gordon Shyy said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they searched the area for any signs of foul play, Shyy said.

The San Francisco medical examiner did not find any external signs of a homicide, according to Shyy.

Shyy said the death is not being investigated as a homicide but police will continue to look into why the body was in the garbage chute.
