OAKLAND -- A private security guard shot and wounded a suspected burglar in the Oakmore District on Thursday, police said.
The security guard was patrolling the neighborhood at around noon, when a home burglary in the 4000 block of Harding Way was interrupted, according to police.
At least two burglars were spotted trying to break into the house, and one fled in a car later recovered in nearby Dimond Park, police said. The private security guard in his car followed one of the suspects on foot to Lyman Road, a few blocks from the scene.
The guard confronted the suspect, who took off running, and chased him on foot to the driveway of a home in the 4000 block of Waterhouse Road, where the suspect allegedly pulled out a screwdriver and attempted to attack the guard, police said. The security guard then shot him in the leg, according to police.
The suspect, who police said is 18 years old, was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. The security guard, whose name was not released, works for Security Code 3, and was patrolling a neighborhood that has been heavily hit by burglars of late.
Signs in yards of several homes in the neighborhood warn that the area is patrolled by the private security company. Officials at the company declined to comment.
A TV, other electronic devices and guns were left scattered on the side of the home on Harding Way, but police had not yet determined if the items were taken from that house or another house in the neighborhood. The burglary and shooting remain under investigation.
