SALINAS - A 5-year-old boy was uninjured after a man shoved him into traffic in Salinas on Sunday afternoon, police said.
At about 4 p.m., 23-year-old Diego Edeza was jogging south on North Main Street near Boronda Road, police said.
A 19-year-old man walking in the opposite direction on North Main Street with his 5-year-old brother began to pass Edeza, but Edeza stopped and spit on the older brother, police said.
The two men spoke to each other and Edeza spit on the man again, police said.
Edeza then kicked the 5-year-old in the abdomen causing the boy to fall backwards into traffic, according to police.
The child was able to get to his feet and return to the sidewalk before he was struck by passing vehicles. He was not injured, police said.
Based on witness statements, police said the attack appears not to have been provoked.
Edeza was booked into Monterey County Jail for felony child abuse and battery, police said.
