SAN JOSE -- Police are investigating a fatal Thursday night shooting in which a resident said he fired in self-defense at a gunman trying to break into his East Foothills home.

Police went to the 3500 block of Pine Ridge Way near Clayton Road just before 8 p.m. on reports of shots fired. The man who called in the report met police and said an unknown man had tried to break into his home, and fired a gun in his direction. He said he then got his own firearm and shot at the suspect in self-defense. Two people then got into a car and quickly drove off, and the resident then called police. He was unharmed.

While no suspects or vehicle were found at the scene, a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital a short time later, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police believe that man -- who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin -- was involved in the Pine Ridge Way shooting.

Police are treating the shooting as the city's 8th homicide of the year, although no additional details of that determination -- and whether the resident or the dead man's accomplice could face charges -- were immediately available.
