RICHMOND -- A suspected drunken driver is facing several felony charges after a crash that left one passenger dead and two young children hurt, authorities said Tuesday.

Chanetta Flanagan, 36, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing great bodily injury, driving with a suspended license with a prior DUI and two counts of child endangerment. All of the charges are felonies.

Flanagan, of Stockton, veered off the road and struck a tree on San Pablo Avenue between Hilltop Drive and Stanton Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, police said. The crash crushed the roof of the car, killing her friend, Harold Mason Jr. of Richmond.

Two girls, ages 3 and 5, sitting in the back seat were also injured. Police said the 3-year-old -- Flanagan's daughter -- was in a child safety seat, but the 5-year-old, Flanagan's niece, was not.

The 5-year-old girl remains in serious condition while the 3-year-old girl is stable.
