WATCH THIS:

  • "The 86th Academy Awards" (5:30 p.m. PT, 8:30 p.m. ET, ABC): Don't expect any songs about female breasts as Ellen DeGeneres returns to host Hollywood's big bash. She's sure to be more of a soothing presence than last year's naughty-minded emcee, Seth MacFarlane. As for the competition, "Gravity," "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" are the leading contenders in a tight Best Picture race. Our hope? To make it through the night without any gasbag acceptance speeches by production-design types and sound-mixing guys.

  • "True Detective" (9 p.m., HBO): If you haven't been watching, you're missing some astonishing television. The eight-part crime drama nears its conclusion as Hart and Cohle (Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey) call a truce to investigate new leads in the troubling case they worked years ago.

  • "The Walking Dead" (9 p.m., AMC): In another one of those episodes that zeros in on just a couple of characters, Daryl and Beth (Norman Reedus and Emily Kinney) are going at it like an old, grumpy married couple. Maybe a few rounds of moonshine will help smooth out their differences. (For a recap of the show, go to www.mercurynews.com/tv after the episode.)
