Students across the country celebrated books and reading on Monday as part of the 17th annual Read Across America event.

In the Bay Area, schools throughout the area had volunteers, teachers, administrators, firefighters and local officials taking time to read to elementary schoolchildren.

In the East Bay, dozens of events occurred at local schools, including in San Ramon, Hayward, Alameda, Pleasanton and elsewhere.

The book chosen for kindergarten through second grade for this year's event, which is sponsored by the National Education Association, was "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt. It tells the story of Duncan, who wants to color but finds his crayons have decided they have had enough of that.

For children in grades 3 to 6, the chosen book was "Thank You, Mr. Falker," by Patricia Polacco.
