OAKLAND -- Two suspects who fled on a golf cart after stealing an electronic game system from a Montera Middle School student Monday morning were captured more than an hour later after they abandoned the cart and ran into Joaquin Miller Park, police said.

The suspects, ages 16 and 17, drove the cart to the area of Joaquin Miller Road and Pierpoint Avenue about a half mile away, where they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the park.

They apparently hid briefly in backyards and they were both arrested at 9:08 a.m. The electronic game system and the golf cart were both recovered, police said.

The suspects were arrested on two counts of grand theft.

The theft happened about 7:30 a.m. on the campus at 5555 Ascot Dr.

The suspects used force to take the hand-held gaming system from the student and then fled on the campus golf cart, police said.
