FREMONT -- A pedestrian was killed on Interstate 880 late Saturday after being hit by an SUV traveling northbound in Fremont, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol first received reports about 10:30 p.m. of a pedestrian on the freeway just north of Mowry Avenue, CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. When officers arrived, they found the pedestrian down in the lanes after being hit by a Toyota SUV.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Simmons said. It was not immediately known what the person was doing in the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota SUV stayed on scene and was cooperative with investigators, Simmons said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
