FREMONT -- A pedestrian killed on Interstate 880 in Fremont over the weekend after being hit by an SUV was identified as a 54-year-old New Jersey man, according to the Alameda County Coroner's office.

Shukal Kumar, of Hillsborough, N.J., was fatally struck about 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the northbound portion of the freeway near Mowry Avenue, a coroner's spokesman said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, when officers arrived they found Kumar down in the lanes after being hit by a Toyota SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. It was not yet known why he was in the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota SUV stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, officers said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
