EL CERRITO -- Thinking another student had his dollar, an 18-year-old El Cerrito High School student beat a classmate over the head with a desk, police said.

Tajan Adams, of Richmond, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon following the attack inside a classroom Wednesday, El Cerrito police said.

In between classes at about 1:10 p.m., Adams realized he was missing a buck, so he confronted a 17-year-old boy who he thought had the bill, police said. A shouting match turned into fisticuffs and escalated when Adams grabbed a desk and hit the other student over the head because he felt disrespected, police said. A staff member broke up the fight.

The victim was taken to the hospital with a cut to his head and injuries on his face. Adams was booked at County Jail in Martinez.
