ATHERTON -- A man was killed when he was struck by a train early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The man was hit by a southbound Caltrain as it approached Fair Oaks Lane near the Atherton station, shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to a Caltrain spokeswoman.

Authorities declined to release the man's name on Saturday, saying they had not yet notified his family.

No information about the cause of the accident was available. The train that struck the man was delayed for more than an hour because of the collision; it was the last southbound passenger train for the night.

The spokeswoman said it was the third Caltrain fatality this year.
