ALAMEDA--Two people were displaced Saturday after a fire broke out in a home in the 1500 block of Benston Street in Alameda.

The Alameda Fire Department received a call around 3:30 p.m. about a fire in the lower unit of a two-story building. The fire was confined to the bedroom and quickly extinguished.

No injuries were reported, although extensive smoke damage made the unit uninhabitable. Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at $40,000.

A total of 18 firefighters responded. The fire is under investigation, but not considered suspicious. Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
