Man crosses highway to escape officers
A wanted parolee made a bold bid to escape pursuing officers around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday by running across six lanes of Highway 101 and scaling a 12-foot sound wall into an adjoining neighborhood, where he disappeared.
According to Morgan Hill police Sgt. Carson Thomas, officers were investigating an unrelated matter at the Executive Inn motel on Condit Road when they saw Gerardo Betancourt, 37, who has been wanted for parole violations for about a year.
Betancourt got into a car and led police on a brief slow-speed chase, eventually getting on Highway 101. He then pulled over to the shoulder and rushed across the lanes, hurdling over the median and climbing over the sound wall.
"That's someone who really wants to get away," Thomas said. "For someone to run across six lanes of traffic, that's taking his life in his own hands."
