PALO ALTO -- Police surrounded a house on the 800 block of Ames Avenue Monday evening after a resident returned home and found signs of a break-in and called authorities.
Palo Alto police Lt. Zach Perron said the woman used her smartphone to look at surveillance video set up inside the home.
"She saw what she thought was two people who she did not recognize in her home," Perron told reporters gathered at the scene late Monday.
Police alerted residents of the block to stay inside with their doors locked. They also used a loudspeaker to call for anyone inside to come out of the surrounded house, and brought in negotiators and the SWAT team.
The neighborhood of single-family homes is off Ross Road and near Palo Verde Elementary School.
