SAN JOSE -- Police arrested a suspect in a January shooting that left a victim dead amid bustling apartment complexes in west San Jose, calling it a gang-related slaying.
Witnesses described a volley of gunfire ringing out just after twilight on Jan. 14, with panicked residents racing for cover and Steve Hyman, 34, left face down and motionless on Loma Verde Drive near Eden Avenue. It was the year's third homicide; there have been seven more since.
On Tuesday, police arrested San Jose resident Jesus Bustos, 35, without incident and booked him into Santa Clara County Jail, where he remains held without bail.
San Jose police said Bustos was identified after a lengthy investigation, and the shooting has been classified as gang-related, with resultant gang enhancements being charged by the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office.
Police added that the suspect and victim did not know each other.
"This was an extensive and complicated homicide investigation involving gangs in our community," said Lt. Mike Kihmm, the department's head of homicide investigations.
Kihmm credited a work by homicide detectives, the police gang suppression, Metro and covert response units to "solve this homicide for the victim's family and the citizens of San Jose."
