OAKLAND -- One man was killed and another was in critical condition after a shooting early Friday evening in the city's Longfellow neighborhood.
Officers in the area of 43rd and Market streets heard several shots fired around 5:30 p.m. and rushed to the scene, according to Oakland police Lt. David Elzey. When they arrived, however, they found only shell casings littering 43rd Street.
As police began to canvass the area for victims, they were told that two men showed up at an area hospital. One was pronounced dead shortly thereafter and the second remains in critical condition, Elzey added.
The name of the person who was killed was not released pending notification of their next of kin. Police did not announce any arrests and investigators did not release information about a possible motive.
The man's death was the city's 23rd homicide of the year. The shooting comes two days after Johnathan Lacey, 32, was killed in a drive-by shooting on the 1600 block of Eighth Street near Campbell Street.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 each for information leading to the arrest of the killers in these cases. Tipsters may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
