HAYWARD -- A man suffered major injuries after being struck by a pickup truck late Friday afternoon in Hayward, police said.
Around 5:30 p.m., an 88-year-old man was crossing the street at the intersection of Silva and Thomas avenues when he was hit by a pickup truck traveling southbound on Silva Avenue, according to Hayward police Sgt. Chad Olthoff.
The pedestrian, identified only as a Hayward resident, was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he remained in critical condition Saturday.
The driver of the pickup, a 49-year-old Hayward man, immediately stopped after the collision and waited for paramedics to respond. The driver is cooperating with the investigation, and alcohol or drugs aren't suspected to be a factor, Olthoff added.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Witnesses to the accident can contact Olthoff at the Hayward Police Department Traffic Bureau at 510-293-7099.
