LAKE FOREST -- Wildlife officials say a mountain lion had to be shot and killed after stalking a family on an Orange County wilderness trail.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesman Andrew Hughan tells the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1fIYmrY) that the 1-year-old, 60-pound mountain lion hissed and came within pouncing distance of Mission Viejo resident Madison Smith as she walked with her kids Sunday in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

With help from another hiker, the family got away and called 911.

A game warden and deputy found the mountain lion, and when it acted aggressively toward them, the game warden shot it. The body will be examined to see if it had a disease that made it aggressive.

Authorities had increased patrols in the park after recent mountain lion sightings.
