SAN JOSE -- Willow Glen's Wes Malik allowed singles to two of the first three batters he faced Friday.
From there, it was mostly smooth sailing as the left-hander struck out 10 to lead the host Rams to a 5-0 victory over Westmont, which two days earlier beat Willow Glen 9-0.
"We had a hard day of practice yesterday, and we were hungry for this win," Malik said. "I really wanted this one."
The victory kept Willow Glen (12-3, 7-1) ahead of Westmont (10-3, 5-2) in the bunched up Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division standings. Leigh also entered the day with one loss.
Willow Glen gave Malik all the support he would need with three runs in the first inning.
Nathan Maggi's bases-loaded walk pushed across the first run, and Jacob Flores followed with a two-run single. Maggi and Flores are sophomores.
"We have a really young team," Willow Glen coach Mike Riley said. "I think we start two freshmen and four sophomores, sometimes five. We're really young and just learning. The program's in really good shape right now."
Willow Glen won the Central Coast Section Division II championship last season, beating Westmont in the semifinals.
Given the results thus far, the teams look as if they will be in the mix again this season.
Westmont coach Tony Pianto praised Malik's performance Friday, saying, "This guy pitched a heck of a game. You've got to hand it to him. It's a tough league, it's a good league. We know them well, and I am sure they know us well. We've got to tip our hat to them today, but we'll see what happens."
Willow Glen added two runs in the fourth as Saint Mary's-bound Matt Toscano stole two bases and scored on an error, and Maggi hit a two-run double.
Westmont opened the seventh with back-to-back singles, but Malik struck out the final two batters to complete the shutout.
"All of my stuff was working, especially my slider," Malik said. "That was my go-to pitch today."
Archbishop Mitty 2, St. Francis 1 (11 innings)
Mitty scored with two out in the bottom of the 11th inning to outlast St. Francis (10-2, 5-2) in a classic West Catholic Athletic League game. St. Francis' John Gavin struck out 13 in nine innings, allowing just a run in the first. Trenton Scharrenberg had two hits for Mitty (11-3, 5-2).
Bellarmine 3, Sacred Heart Cathedral 2
Brandon Wong drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Bellarmine (10-3, 3-3) edged Sacred Heart Cathedral (4-8-1, 1-6) in WCAL play.
