SANTA CRUZ -- A big rig with 30,000 pounds of frozen squid crashed on its side Monday morning near northbound Highway 1 and northbound Highway 17.
The 55-year-old driver, from Watsonville, was not injured in the 10:50 a.m. wreck, said California Highway Patrol officer Brad Sadek. The driver turned right too fast as he exited Highway 1 to northbound Highway 17. The weight of the trailer helped it topple, Sadek said. The load of squid was contained to the trailer.
No other vehicles were involved. Traffic was diverted to the shoulder and firefighters and a tow truck crew responded. Fuel leaked on the road, authorities said.
The CHP expects cleanup to finish about 2 or 3 p.m. Monday.
