SAN LEANDRO -- Two hand grenades were discovered at a garbage yard in San Leandro on Monday, but were safely removed, police said.
Employees at Alameda County Industries, located at 610 Aladdin Ave., found the pair of grenades at 3:50 p.m. in the business' garbage collection area, according to San Leandro police.
The Alameda County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad was called in to safely remove and dispose of the grenades. Bomb squad technicians confirmed the grenades were possibly active, police said.
"We encourage anyone who has ammunition they no longer want or any explosive devices that they may have found, to contact their local police department for assistance," Lt. Mike Sobek of San Leandro police said. "Throwing them into the garbage is never a safe way to dispose of these dangerous items."
