ALAMEDA -- A juvenile who was reported possibly armed with a handgun at Island High School on Thursday morning was actually carrying a BB gun, police said.

The report prompted police to place the campus at 1900 Third St. and other nearby schools on a "soft" lockdown -- basically asking students to shelter in place -- while officers searched for the suspect, who was contacted in the area of Main Street and Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway.

Police described the BB gun as a replica semi-automatic handgun. Police did not disclose the name and age of the juvenile.

A parent of an Island High School student called police at 10:39 a.m. after their child said someone at the school was carrying a gun, and the juvenile was arrested at 11:11 a.m., when the lockdown was also lifted.

The investigation determined the crime occurred off the school campus, police said.
