OAKLAND -- A man who had threatened to jump from a roof on Grand Avenue near the Piedmont border Thursday afternoon was detained by police without being injured, authorities said.
The drama, which began at 3:36 p.m. in the 3600 block of Grand Avenue, played out until 4:42 p.m. when the man was taken off the roof.
Initial reports were that the man, whose name and age were not released, was trying to flee from police and was running across several rooftops in the area. It was not immediately known why he was trying to elude officers.
Police shut down Grand Avenue and some other streets while officers negotiated with the man before he agreed to come off the roof. No injuries were reported.
Streets were reopened about 4:50 p.m.
Earlier Thursday, a suicidal man who was threatening to jump from the Ardley Avenue overpass above the westbound lanes of Interstate 580 was taken into custody after a more than a half-hour standoff.
