SAN JOSE -- The family of San Jose State's Jared Leaf is encouraged as the junior linebacker continues to recover from second-degree burns suffered in a fire at his apartment near campus Wednesday night.
Spartans coach Ron Caragher visited with Leaf's family at the hospital Saturday morning and provided this report via text message:
"They are encouraged by Jared's improvement and thankful for supportive thoughts and prayers from so many of his teammates, friends and family," Caragher wrote. "Visitations are limited to family only at this point in time, with that likely to change as his situation improves."
Leaf's mother, Kirsten Hall, said by e-mail that she is "amazed at all of the love and support that is pouring in from family, friends, the football coaches and players and the incredible staff at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center."
The family is in the process of creating a method for people to make donations to assist with Leaf's medical bills. The school is still running that through its compliance department to ensure no NCAA violations will occur, so supporters are encouraged to hold off on donations until further notice.
