SAN JOSE -- The Earthquakes have scheduled one of their biggest exhibitions since re-entering Major League Soccer six years ago, playing Spanish power Atletico Madrid on July 27 at Candlestick Park, the team announced Monday.

Tickets will go on sale for the match May 20 at www.sjearthquakes.com.

Atletico Madrid is concluding one of its most successful seasons in history, playing in the semifinals of the European Champions League -- the world's most prestigious club tournament. The Rojiblancos tied EPL club Chelsea 0-0 in their first leg last week.

Atletico Madrid also is leading La Liga with three games left in the season. The team has 88 points with a 28-4-3 record in a league usually dominated by Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Atletico's roster this season features Spanish international forwards David Villa and Diego Costa, who have combined for 40 goals in 31 starts. The team also has Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Brazilian defender Filipe Luis and Spanish midfielder Koke.

The game will be part of Atletico Madrid's preparation for next season. European powerhouses play exhibitions in the United States over the summer to help expand their brands.

"This is a great opportunity for Bay Area soccer fans to watch their local team take on one of the premier clubs in the world," Earthquakes president Dave Kaval said in a statement. "Hosting a UEFA Champions League semifinalist is a special experience. Earthquakes fans have some great games to look forward to this summer and this match adds to the list."

Atletico Madrid has won 10 Copa del Rey championships, nine La Liga titles and two UEFA Super Cup and Europa League titles.

The match adds to the marquee games being played in the Bay Area this summer, starting May 27 when the U.S. national team faces Azerbaijan at Candlestick as part of preparation for the World Cup in Brazil.

The Quakes are scheduled to play host to the Los Angeles Galaxy on June 28 at Stanford Stadium as well as face the Seattle Sounders on Aug. 2 in Levi's Stadium's inaugural event.
