SAN JOSE -- Three people were displaced after a fire started in the basement of their home located near Japantown, according to a fire captain.

The one-alarm blaze ignited in a home on the 500 block of North Eighth Street, according to fire Capt. Fernando Munoz.

Neighbors saw smoke coming from the home at about 2:37 a.m. and called 911. When fire crews arrived, they found the basement was on fire and quickly extinguished the blaze.

The residents were at the hospital when the fire sparked and returned home after being notified by a neighbor, Munoz said.

Fire crews cut holes in the walls and roof to make sure the fire did not spread.

The cause of the fire is not known, but it appears to be accidental, Munoz said.
