OAKLAND -- A neighbor of a woman fatally shot in her car outside her Sobrante Park home April 23 has been arrested and charged with the killing, authorities said Thursday.
Shawn Kimani Martin, 38, is charged with murder in the death of Melissa Martinez, 21. Martinez was found shot in her car about 9:43 p.m. April 23 in the 10500 block of Acalanes Drive. She died at a hospital at 10:12 p.m.
Officer Nick Calonge said Martin admitted shooting Martinez but said it was in self-defense, claiming Martinez had a gun. Calonge said police have not been able to substantiate that claim and did not find a weapon.
Calonge said Martin and Martinez had been next-door neighbors about a year but got into a dispute about a month ago. He would not say what the dispute was over.
Martinez had just gotten into her car to drive to visit relatives when she was shot multiple times. She died later at a hospital.
After police learned of the dispute, Martin was detained the night of the shooting and eventually admitted his involvement and was arrested, authorities said.
Besides the murder charge, Martin is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. He has a prior possession of marijuana for sale conviction from October 2002 and felon in possession of a firearm conviction in Sept. 2005. Martin is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
