UNION CITY -- A man escaped a carjacker Tuesday night at the Union Landing Shopping Center and helped lead police to the suspect, officials said Thursday.

Officers were dispatched at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday to the plaza off Dyer Street to investigate an attempted carjacking, Cmdr. Ben Horner said.

The victim told police he was getting out his vehicle near TGI Fridays when he was confronted by a man who threatened to kill him if he did not turn over his car keys, Horner said.

Police have not said whether the suspect was armed.

"The victim was able to close the door on his vehicle and drive away from the suspect," Horner said.

The victim, who was not injured, then called police as he kept an eye on the suspect in the parking lot, directing officers to his location.

The suspect, identified as Javiejon Rodriguez, 27, of Union City, was arrested on suspicion of attempted carjacking.
