As 49ers arch nemesis Richard Sherman basked in the glow Wednesday of becoming the NFL's highest-paid cornerback, he said something that should resonate with Michael Crabtree and 22 other 49ers.

Sherman, a Stanford product, spoke about the importance of landing his extension (four years, $40 million guaranteed) now rather than entering this season on the end of his rookie deal.

"You never want something like this hanging over your head," Sherman said in a press conference at Seattle Seahawks headquarters.

"Obviously you're still going to play the same way and everything. But it allows you to play a little more free, no stress. You don't have to worry about anything but 'ball. Your family is taken care of. Now you can focus on 'ball. Nobody else can bother you, at least for a little while."

Sherman secured that massive contract after propelling the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl win. Along the way, he deflected a Colin Kaepernick pass to Crabtree that got intercepted by Malcolm Smith and sealed the Seahawks' NFC Championship win.

Crabtree has one year remaining on his rookie contract, with a base salary of $3,500,000. Kaepernick, running back Frank Gore, guard Mike Iupati and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey are other starters not under contract in 2015.

Here is a complete list of 49ers whose contracts expire after this season:

RB Frank Gore $3,300,000

G Mike Iupati $2,970,500
