BERKELEY -- Real Madrid, one of the most storied soccer clubs in history, might play an exhibition at Cal's Memorial Stadium this summer.
Cal officials have called a news conference Friday to announce a "major international event" coming to Memorial. A source familiar with the event said Real's appearance is one of the options. The UEFA Champions League finalist was looking to play in a Bay Area football stadium at the end of July, this newspaper reported last week.
Real's rival club, Atletico Madrid, is scheduled to face the Earthquakes on July 27 at Candlestick Park. First, though, the Spanish clubs will meet May 24 in Lisbon for the Champions League trophy.
Real plans to train at UCLA while participating in the preseason Guinness International Champions Cup, July 24-Aug. 4. It wanted to add another high-profile game to its American tour, a source said last week. Real played Mexico's Club America at Candlestick in 2010 .
