Learning techniques of teaching is critical

What is wrong with California education is teachers are not required to know anything about teaching and education. Current requirements are: a bachelor's degree in any subject, a basic skills exam, a subject-matter exam, adequate performance as an intern in the classroom, and the recommendation of a sponsor.

In the 1980s, I was asked by a Fortune 100 company to operate an international training institute in Los Angeles. I was required to get a California teaching certification. I had to take courses in techniques of teaching, learning, instruction, analysis, development, presentation and evaluation.

Unfortunately, these courses are no longer required.

We need to require all educators to know how people learn, how to create objectives, how to assess learning, and how to modify these procedures to improve them over time.

The difference between teaching and watching a video or reading a book is that teachers help students overcome their barriers to learning and adapt their process throughout the learning experience.

The California Legislature and the educational organizations need to work together to put teaching and learning skills back into the requirements for all educators.

Obama is a gifted speaker, not a doer

How much American blood will be shed to pay for President Barack Obama's poorly thought through decision to free one questionable soldier. The decision resulted in the release of five treacherous, high-level Taliban criminals from Guantanamo Bay.

The president's executive orders have been inept, ineffectual and dangerous. We have no transparency because everything is pending and an ongoing situation. Therefore, no real honest information is available. We have to live with the White House stonewalling. Examples: Benghazi, Obamacare, IRS, NSA, and the VA scandal.

I'm tired of Obama's outrage, his mad as hell hollow statements. We need action, not empty, emotional phrases like "we will get to the bottom of it."

The president is a gifted speaker but not a gifted doer. Nothing ever changes or gets resolved. What is the next fiasco that awaits?

Obama cannot just keep blaming Bush

We released five known terrorists back to the Taliban in exchange for one American deserter. The soldier took off, and basically turned his back to join the terrorists. This guy needs to be punished, dishonorably discharged, tried. Look at the American soldiers who were killed looking for this jerk.

Why release five known terrorists? Why haven't they been found guilty all the time they have been in our prison?

Obama seems to always favor the Muslims. He cannot be trusted anymore. He should be impeached for all he has done while in office. He does his own thing without going through Congress.

He is supposed to be anti-military, yet since 2008, he has said we are getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan. How much money and how many American lives have been lost since? He has definitely lied to the American people. Oh, yeah, he has made a change -- for the worse.

Wake up, America, we need to put people with good track records in office before sticking with slick-talking promises. Obama has been in office too long now to keep blaming George Bush.

Bergdahl is just president's pawn

Trading five dangerous Taliban terrorists for Bowe Bergdahl was a bad and perhaps illegal deal. This trade wasn't really about Bergdahl, but President Barack Obama's desire to establish direct ties with the Taliban to solicit their help to close Guantanamo.

Unfortunately, Bergdahl, who is an Obama pawn, should have been sent home long before he deserted his country and comrades. Bergdahl could have admitted to his commanding officer that he made a mistake by enlisting to fight in a war he had no intention to fight in and request an administrative discharge on the grounds he's a conscientious objector.

Bergdahl took his father's advice ("follow your conscience") and walked away to seek out and, perhaps, support the enemy.

Obama's Rose Garden show was timed to get the VA scandal off the front pages by using deception, distorted truths and flat-out lies. Like most of his other PR mistakes, like Benghazi, it backfired within a few hours once the real facts became known.

What's frightening is that even with all the scandals currently being investigated, Obama is just getting started doing whatever he wants.

Hostage trading is indeed acceptable

The United States is right in trying to get back U.S. citizens, in war or not.

We have traded before, as President Ronald Reagan did with Iran in the hostage situation. Israel has traded many for a few.

In Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's negotiation, however, I think we should have traded one for one; five for one was too many.
