MILPITAS -- The bodies of a man and a woman were found Friday afternoon near Hidden Lake Park after an earlier report of two shots being fired in the area.
The investigation into how the deaths occurred was ongoing, the Milpitas Police Department reported.
"Just after 1 p.m. this afternoon, the Police Department received a phone call about an in-progress incident in the levee area just west of Hidden Lake Park," police Cmdr. Armando Corpuz said. "Our officers responded to that area and found two bodies."
A resident in the area of Hidden Lake Park called Milpitas police around midday Friday and reported hearing two gunshots, according to police radio traffic. Police directed traffic out of the area toward North Milpitas Boulevard, as homes nearby were evacuated.
Corpuz said he believed that the two people whose bodies were find were Milpitas residents; at least one of them was associated with a home in the 700 block of Erie Circle, he added. At about 2:50 p.m., armed officers closed in on a residence on that block, near the intersection of Erie Drive.
Officers used a police cruiser's public address system to order occupants to come outside with their hands up. After no one emerged, officers entered the residence, but apparently the officers did not find anyone inside, as they left minutes later.
Officers closed a portion of North Milpitas Boulevard to vehicle and pedestrian traffic as well as parts of Escuela Parkway and Jacklin Road. In addition, Berryessa Creek Trail and trails in and out of the park -- and the park itself -- were also closed to the public.
Corpuz later confirmed that there were no outstanding suspects in this case.
"One of the things we really want to convey is that there is no risk to the public," he said.
Corpuz declined to say more about the apparent cause of death, saying only that the investigation was continuing.
