MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Police have surrounded an apartment complex on the 1000 block of Williams Way where an armed man has barricaded himself.

The incident started as a welfare check at about 12:50 p.m., said Mountain View police spokeswoman Shino Tanaka. Police received a call about a 46-year-old man who appeared to be depressed.

Officers arrived and removed the man's 13-year-old daughter from the apartment complex, Tanaka said.

At one point, the man flashed a firearm, Tanaka said. Officers withdrew and called in hostage negotiators as well as a SWAT team, the Mountain View Fire Department and the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

No shots have been fired, Tanaka said.

Half a dozen units at the apartment complex have been evacuated, Tanaka said. People are being asked to stay clear of the area.

Tanaka said the man is walking in and out of an apartment unit and communicating with police.
