CAMPBELL -- Two girls suffered burn injuries Wednesday night when a built-in backyard fire pit exploded, according to a Santa Clara County fire official.
Firefighters responded to a home in the 800 block of Brierwood Way sometime around 10:15 p.m., Battalion Chief Wally Finck said. Six girls had been sitting around the fire pit for about 30 minutes when there was "some sort of explosion," Finck said.
The fire pit was running on a natural gas line.
The explosion did not start a fire, he said.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
"Obviously we want to know why it did have that failure," Finck said.
