Woman loses jewelry in tree-trimming scam
Men posing as employees of a tree trimming company stole an elderly resident's jewelry this week, police said.
A resident in the 500 block of Pearson Avenue near Johnson Street told police that two men knocked on her door about 4 p.m. Wednesday and offered to trim her trees, said Lt. Randy Brandt.
While one spoke with her, the second man sneaked into her home and took some jewelry. The men drove away in a small dark-colored sport utility vehicle.
The woman called police a little later when she realized her home had been burglarized, Brandt said.
Police said the suspects were two Latino males in their 20s, who are 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. They were casually dressed and spoke Spanish over two-way radios.
Police are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity or thinks they may be a victim of a similar scam to call them at 510-577-3230 or contact the anonymous tip line at 510-577-3278.

Murder charges filed in December shooting
Murder charges have been filed against a man accused of fatally shooting an acquaintance in December during a dispute over a woman, according to authorities.
Investigators said Thursday that video surveillance tapes played a key role in identifying the suspect, Lyle "Jersey" Johnson, also known as Isiah Lowery, 23. He was arrested in Las Vegas June 26.
Johnson is charged in the Dec. 27 fatal shooing of Aubert Gholston, 26.
Officer Jason Andersen said the two men knew each other and were having a dispute over a woman they both knew who was close to Gholston.
On the day of the killing, the two men began to argue when Johnson confronted Gholston in a car on the street. During argument, Johnson shot Gholston, Andersen said.
Andersen said police found witnesses but the key piece of evidence was videotape from the scene of the shooting.
Johnson was arrested at a relative's home in Las Vegas and awaits extradition.
Police said Johnson claimed the shooting was self-defense.

Police use videotape to catch suspect
Surveillance tape from inside an optometry business helped police find the man accused of burglarizing it.
Oakland resident Joseph Garrison, 30, was carrying a bag with some of the store's eyeglasses when officers caught up with him in Oakland about five hours after the 5 a.m. Tuesday burglary, said San Leandro police Lt. Randall Brandt.
Police arriving at the store in the 1300 block of MacArthur Boulevard found the front window shattered, Brandt said, and several dozen eyeglasses were missing.
Officers checking the surveillance videotape got a good look at the suspects and their vehicle.
Police are seeking two suspects who were with Garrison in the shop.
Garrison was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon on a charge of burglary. He was being held in the Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
