SAN JOSE -- A would-be burglar was arrested after he barricaded himself into a home he broke into and engaged in a standoff with police for about 90 minutes Monday, according to the San Jose Police Department.
A resident living near Senter Road and Balfour Drive called police around 11:30 a.m. to report someone was forcing his way into her home, police said. The woman escaped, and when police arrived, the intruder refused to come outside.
As a precaution, police evacuated homes in the immediate area, which is about a block west of the Los Lagos Golf Course. No injuries were reported.
Around 1 p.m., police announced that the man surrendered and was arrested. While the man was inside, he apparently tried to light a cigarette and left the gas on, so the San Jose Fire Department was summoned to make sure the home was safe.
