ATHERTON -- A passenger train hit and killed a man late Thursday on Watkins Avenue, a Caltrain spokeswoman confirmed.

No one else was injured.

The preliminary investigation indicates the man's death is a suicide, but the official cause of death will be determined by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.

The collision was reported around 9:30 p.m. on Watkins Avenue, according to Caltrain's Christine Dunn. The southbound train had just left the Redwood City station and was slated to make a stop in Menlo Park when the person was hit.

Trains do not stop at the Atherton station on weekdays, Dunn added. The final scheduled stop for the train was Tamien station in San Jose.

Delays are expected for commuters, and SamTrans has set up a bus bridge between Menlo Park and Redwood City for riders, the agency confirmed.
