HAYWARD -- A 5-year-old Hayward boy who ran into the road was hit by a minivan and in critical condition on life support at an area hospital Monday, police said.

The boy was near his home near the intersection of Dixon Street at Copperfield Avenue on Saturday when he was hit at 12:48 p.m., Hayward police Sgt. Jason Corsolini said.

A 64-year-old Hayward woman was traveling southbound on Dixon Street when the boy ran in front of her minivan, Corsolini said. She stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation, and no drugs or alcohol are suspected, he said.

An ambulance took the boy to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, where he was on life support Monday morning.

Police are still investigating the collision, and any witnesses are encouraged to contact the Hayward Police Department at 510-293-7149.
