HAYWARD -- A 5-year-old boy who was struck by a minivan while chasing a ball across the street over the weekend in the city's Tennyson-Alquire neighborhood has died, police said Tuesday.

The boy, identified as Jose Luis Garcia, was near his home at the intersection of Dixon Street at Copperfield Avenue on Saturday when he was hit just before 12:50 p.m., Hayward police Sgt. Jason Corsolini said.

The boy had been in critical condition on life support at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland until he was pronounced dead on Monday night, Corsolini said.

A 64-year-old Hayward woman was traveling southbound on Dixon Street when Jose ran in front of her minivan, Corsolini said. She stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, and no drugs or alcohol are suspected, police said.

Jose had been playing with other children in a driveway near his home and ran after a ball that bounced to the other side of the street. He was struck while returning to the group with the ball, police said.

Police said the case remained under investigation on Tuesday. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call police at 510-293-7149.
