SAN JOSE -- A construction crew accidentally cut through a gas line in an East San Jose neighborhood Wednesday morning, prompting evacuations and disrupting light-rail and bus service in the area, authorities said.

An unidentified contractor was working on the VTA's Santa Clara Alum Rock Bus Rapid Transit Project at South Capitol and Florence avenues when it cut a 2-inch line around 9:20 a.m., according to the San Jose Fire Department.

A light-rail train and several buses were evacuated as a precaution, surrounding streets were cordoned off to traffic, and nearby residents were asked to shelter in place by closing their windows and doors and staying indoors.

A PG&E crew was summoned to tend to the line break, and around 10:30 a.m. the leak was capped and the restrictions were soon lifted.
