LIVERMORE -- An Oakland woman was arrested after she left her young children inside a car while she gambled at a nearby casino, authorities said.
Phaley Nget, 37, was arrested Monday after bystanders called police around 6 p.m. to report that the two children, ages 2 and 3, had been left unattended in a vehicle parked at Casino 580 in Livermore. The children were not injured.
Nget has been charged with child endangerment and was booked into Santa Rita County Jail. The children were taken into protective custody.
The National Weather Service reported that the temperature in Livermore was about 75 degrees shortly before 6 p.m. Monday.
Leaving children inside cars can have deadly consequences, even on a cool day, because cars can heat up quickly, police say. Children's body heat regulatory systems are also less efficient than an adult's, causing them to overheat up to five times faster.
