ALAMEDA -- The Kiwanis Club of Alameda awarded scholarships to five local high school graduates.

The scholarships were awarded to students based on submitted applications and their community involvement, educational factors and financial need.

The recipients were: Fischer Davis from Alameda High School, who received the Virginia Hanson Scholarship and who plans to attend Chapman College; Lachlan Addicot from Encinal High School, who received the Asher Broughton Scholarship and who plans to attend the University of Oregon; Danica Liang from Alameda High School who received the Key Club Scholarship and who plans to attend UC San Diego; Ryan Lee from Alameda High School, who received the Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship and who plans to attend UC Berkeley; and Jiahe Zhang from Alameda High School, who received the John Hanson Scholarship and who plans to attend UC Berkeley.

The Key Club is the world's largest service organization for high school students and part of the Kiwanis International's Service Leadership Program. Many local high school students are members of the Key Club.

Kiwanis meet weekly at noon at the Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Ave., Alameda. Guests are welcome for the program. Lunch is optional. Kiwanis is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child at a time.
