Joaquin Phoenix may play Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel feature, according to TheWrap.

Well, at least the name part makes sense.

I know -- that really was kind of a softball.

A number of actors have reportedly been rumored for the role. Deadline.com reported in June that Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch were on the shortlist. There were also rumors Jared Leto was being considered. Cumberbatch fueled speculation Thursday at Comic-Con when he made a reference to Doctor Strange.

As you know -- and of course you do -- Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who's also the Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Let me clarify -- that isn't in real life. It's a comic book.

Indiewire reported a Connecticut resident spotted Phoenix at a local comic book store while in the area shooting Woody Allen's latest film. The actor was reportedly looking for Doctor Strange comics.

Hmm. What a coincidence.

Or is it?

Marvel is expected to make a number of announcements during its Comic-Con panel Saturday evening.
