SAN FRANCISCO -- After just nine tune-up plate appearances at Triple-A Fresno, second baseman Dan Uggla has been purchased by the Giants and he was immediately inserted into their Friday night starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 34-year-old Uggla had a double, single and two walks in his brief stint with the Grizzlies after being signed to a minor-league contract earlier this week.

The Giants had a desperate need for a second baseman after placing both Marco Scutaro (back) and Ehire Adrianza (hamstring) on the disabled list Friday. In addition to Uggla, Tony Abreu's contract was purchased by the Giants. To make room on the 40-man roster for both players, infielder Nick Noonan and pitcher Jose De Paula were designated for assignment.

Uggla will bat seventh for the Giants in the three-game series opener against the Dodgers at AT&T Park.
