SAN JOSE -- Crews from the San Jose Fire Department and the statewide Cal Fire battled a grass fire for roughly two hours in the east foothills north of Alum Rock Park on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The episode started with California Highway Patrol reports of an abandoned four-door Acura sedan catching fire about 2:35 p.m. near Sierra and Felter roads about two miles north of the park grounds. Three alarms were called by SJFD after it spread to nearby vegetation, and a Cal Fire air tanker was seen dropping retardant on the flames, which burned roughly 12 acres. The fire was reported under control around 4 p.m., with crews working for the next several hours clearing the area and making sure no spot fires ignited.

There were no reports of injuries. Temperatures in San Jose were expected to reach the high 80s on Tuesday.
