OAKLAND -- A 23-year-old man shot and killed by an Alameda County Sheriff's Office deputy early Sunday has been identified.
Jacorey Calhoun, 23, was unarmed and shot in the head by the deputy, said Oakland attorney John Burris, who has been retained by Calhoun's family to investigate the shooting.
"Was he an imminent danger, and if so what was it? There is a lot of unanswered questions," Burris said.
Police said officers attempted to stop the man's 2001 silver Volvo just before 4 a.m. Sunday near 55th and Fairfax avenues because he was possibly linked to an East Oakland home invasion robbery in July in which a resident was pistol whipped.
After the man failed to stop the car, Oakland officers briefly chased the Volvo but lost it.
Police later tried to stop the car at 105th and Edes avenues, but the man got out and ran into nearby yards. Police set up a perimeter and called for backup.
A sheriff's deputy and his police dog responded to assist in the search, police said. What happened next is not clear, but the deputy shot Calhoun in the head in a yard, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Oakland police are investigating what prompted the deputy to shoot the man.
On Monday night, Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said investigators are not releasing additional information for now. Watson also did not confirm the name of the man shot and killed.
Burris said it does not appear officers were being confronted.
"What did he do to cause them to shoot him?" Burris said.
The shooting happened about 5:50 a.m. in a yard in the 10500 block of Acalanes Drive in East Oakland.
No one else was injured.
The shooting is also being investigated by the District Attorney's Office and the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Office Spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson declined comment Monday evening.
The deputy, whose name was not released, is on paid administrative leave.
Burris said he is trying to gather information from police, including whether the deputy had a body-mounted camera activated at the time of the shooting.
