SAN JOSE -- Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly shooting in East San Jose's Gramercy neighborhood in late July, as the investigation continues into who killed him, according to the San Jose Police Department.

David Escalera, 24, of San Jose, was walking in the 200 block of Gramercy Place around 3:40 p.m. July 28 when someone opened fire at him, police said.

Escalera was rushed to the hospital, where was pronounced dead, marking the city's 21st homicide of the year.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. The neighborhood where he was shot has long been plagued by gang activity, embodied in a violently contested footbridge that connects Madden Avenue across Interstate 680 between McKee Road and Alum Rock Avenue.
