Flag raising at Meyers House and Garden
Boy Scouts with Troop 78 will raise the flag at the historic Meyers House and Garden on Aug. 17 to help celebrate the restoration of the home's 19th century flagpole.
The flag raising will take place at 2:30 p.m. The free event will also feature light refreshments and music from Alameda musicians Higgins Larson and Eben Dodd of the Saloons.
The Colonial Revival house at 2021 Alameda Ave. is owned and operated by the Alameda Museum. Its curator, George Gunn, and the museum's board have embarked on a capital campaign to underwrite the preservation and maintenance of the 1897 house and are working to save the original carriage house, which will be open for hardhat tours during the flag-raising celebration.
Mastick Senior Center to host art exhibit
An opening reception for a multimedia art exhibit at Mastick Senior Center will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the lobby of the center at 1155 Santa Clara Ave.
The Mastick Senior Center Advisory Board is hosting the event, which will showcase the work of 27 students and 46 individuals. Mastick Senior Center, which is part of the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, offers programs for people age 50 and older.
While membership is free, students pay for their class supplies and sometimes other fees for instruction. For information, call 510-747-7500.
