SANTA CLARA COUNTY -- The father of a 7-month-old baby, who authorities say was killed by his mother in a Livermore park earlier this year, was found dead Wednesday at an undisclosed location, according to a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office.
Thursday morning, a coroner's official said the office had not made a positive identification but expected to make one later in the day.
Daniel Sherman was the father of William Brian Sherman, the baby who was stabbed to death with a pocket knife in Del Valle Regional Park on April 26. The baby's mother, Ashley Renee Newton, 23, of San Jose, remains in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin charged with murder.
Livermore police Chief Michael Harris was on a family outing at the park on April 26 when he encountered a dazed, bloody Newton, who thrust her baby's body into his arms. Newton later confessed to stabbing the child with a pocket knife after she crashed her car about 200 yards away, authorities said.
Police said that evidence at the crime scene suggested the woman may suffer from depression.
Newton is due back in court next month for a pretrial hearing. Although she admitted to the killing and offered an apology, according to court documents, she has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
Detectives interviewed Daniel Sherman after the incident, but he was never a person of interest or a suspect in the killing.
